New Sony TVs for 2011 feature streaming Internet TV
Seventeen of the 22 new BRAVIA LCD TVs announced by Sony Australia on Tuesday will feature Sony Internet TV, the company’s latest extension of the BRAVIA Internet Video video-on-demand service. With a staggered release from March onwards, Sony’s 2011 TV line-up is split into five distinct series.
According to Toby Barbour, general manager of consumer marketing for Sony Australia, “The new 2011 BRAVIA LCD TV line-up offers Australians a gateway to an enormous and dynamic world of content and only Sony can provide this range of on-demand entertainment now, when consumers want it.”
The Sony Internet TV service lets viewers tune in to one of 24 linear streaming TV channels, in a similar fashion to the BigPond TV offering available on the Telstra T-Box. The BigPond TV linear streaming service is also already available on some Samsung LED and plasma televisions, but currently only offers eight channels. Linear channels on Sony Internet TV include ABC iView, content from Yahoo!7 and surf brand Billabong. The Sony Qriocity music streaming service is also available through the BRAVIA Internet Video interface, which continues to be available on 2011 Sony BRAVIA TVs.
Sony’s Internet TV-enabled models for 2011, which all offer 3D playback, include the BRAVIA HX series (the HX925 and HX820), the single-model BRAVIA NX series (NX720), and the BRAVIA EX series (including EX720, EX520 and EX420 models). The HX series features Sony’s best LCD TVs 2011, with all using a improved ‘X-Reality Pro’ image processing engine. The HX925 uses a local dimming Peak LED backlight, while the HX820 uses local dimming LED lighting arranged around the panel’s edges. Both TVs display images at 200Hz, but Sony rates the premium HX925 as superior — its MotionFlow XR 800 rating combines a 200Hz frame rate with LED backlight scanning at twice the speed of the MotionFlow XR 400-rated HX820.
The 100Hz Sony NX720 differs from the EX models in that it includes integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi, a bezel-less design with a tough Gorilla Glass sheet protecting the LCD panel, and dynamic LED edge-lighting. Sony’s three EX series BRAVIA LCD televisions, also running at 100Hz, are the cheapest with Sony Internet TV built-in — Wi-Fi is optional and active-shutter 3D glasses must be purchased separately where more expensive models have them bundled.
Two more basic Sony BRAVIA LCD TV series are also offered with no Sony Internet TV access — the Full HD Sony CX series (CX720), and the 720p HD BX series (BX320), which also misses out on BRAVIA Internet Video.
